the following discussion mostly applies to Classical Music libraries
(FLAC, DSD, MP3) and SORT type tags......

Hello,

this seems to be the place (newbie here) for sharing experience, and
wondering about the intricacies of name tag sorts in LMS - Here's my
experience with Classical album tracks: usually 1 composer, but several
Album Artists (e.g. 1 soloist + 1 conductor + 1 orchestra, or a duet,
trio, etc.....).

starting from a situation where all composer and artist names in tags
had been recorded as "<First> <Last>" in my music library, and wishing
to have LMS display them in alphabetical order of LAST names first,
here's what I did, half unsuccessfully I must say:

for COMPOSERS(usually 1 per track):
I added a COMPOSERSORT tag (tool: Foobar2000, Mp3tag or both together,
Foobar has a nice library management, Mp3tag has a bettter manual
tagging interface), and populated that tag with "<Last>, <First>" names.
This produced a totally satisfying result in the LMS GUI (or
Squeezelite-X, or Orange Squeeze and the like), with the proviso that
the new COMPOSER list is sorted by last names BUT still displayed (as
originally recorded) as "<First> <Last>" names. Not bad, just takes
getting used to looking at the right end of each line, but it's still
rather pleasant to have these names listed as they usually appear
everywhere (<First> <Last>), rather than as some classroom listing
(<Last>, <First>).

Note: in some instances, there may be 2 composers per track (e.g.
Bach/Busoni or Beethoven/Liszt, or Mussorgsky/Ravel, etc....) - I have
found that if I enter 2 names in the COMPOSERSORT field (with the
adequate separator in between), LMS gets lost and doesn't know how to
correctly "link" the "<First> <Last>" items in the COMPOSER field to the
corresponding "<Last>, <First>" names in the COMPOSERSORT field; so the
result is inconsistent with the overall composer sort, names appear
wherever they can ! Really too bad ! Yet such instances are
rare....... (not a big decision to keep the 1 composer that was the more
"meaningful" of the 2.)

for ALBUM ARTISTS:
based on the decent result of the Composer proceduree above, I did the
same thing with Album Artists, using the ALBUMARTISTSORT tag. I
discovered soon enough that DSD tracks are mishandled by both Foobar and
Mp3tag (can't handle more than 1 artist in the tag), but the worst was
that LMS was totally mishandling even FLAC tracks which contained
multiple Album Artists (same issue as multiple composers above). THe
result was a total mess ! I had to delete all the ALBUMARTISTSORT fields
I had painstakingly created......

So I wonder why there isn't an adequate syntax in tag management which
would unambiguously associate pairs of names, or "sets" of names more
generally....... Also, I wonder if maybe I should brutally update all
the artist and composer names in the library to put them in the "<Last>,
<First>" format, which would settle the matter.....

Your comments and suggestions arre most welcome !
