I think someone else may have eluded to this, but having a lot of processes
running in the background can slow your machine to a crawl as well.   Using
something like KDE System Guard can identify running processes and let you
shut down or kill the ones that are hogging resources.   I currently have
Mandrake 8.1 running on a P166 with 94 mb of ram.  While it's no "speed
demon", it runs faster than it did when I had Windows 95 installed on it!
However, some applications seem to hang on to resources and not let go, even
after they've been closed(K-Office will do this).........sort of like some
windows apps do :)  At least in Linux you can actually find the offender and
"kill him" without having to "reboot"!   I agree with Rodd's comments about
the windows managers and apps designed to run on newer machines.  If you're
using an old machine, forget Enlightenment and Ximian's Evolution! :)   Good
Window Managers for old machines are Black Box, fvwm and WindowMaker.
