hi all, RL has three things that slow it down over other distros:
- ext3 file system by default - slower than ext2 because of the journal writes and syncs necessary. - kautorun - this app has to poll the cdrom. with some ide controllers/cdroms it can really eat up cpu resources. on this old dell laptop i'm using now [pentium/mmx 233] it only takes 1% when active, .35% when inactive. but others have reported 10% or more cpu time. - kernel inefficiency - the currently shipped RL kernel has some speed issues in it. of course, having kde2 as the default wm/desktop doesn't help, and since we don't load opengl drivers by default the video may be sluggish. thanks! joe Joseph Cheek CTO and Founder, Redmond Linux Corp.
