I don't believe that a building architect would present detailed blueprints
to the board. They would fall asleep, snore and generally be very
unimpressed. What he/she would do is present concept drawings, physical
models in cardboard or clay, pictures of similar projects or maybe samples
of stone, marble or finishings.

The software architect can do the same. He/she can present screen shots,
prototypes, examples of similar applications, etc to get across his/her
vision for the final product.

No group of senior managers will be interested in UML models. At best one
can get them to understand and agree on high level requirements and the
overall look and feel of the product. They are mainly interested in how long
and how much. Some of the more astute may ask about risk, but that is
stretching their abilities.

I have found that the amount of detail in a presentation is inversely
proportional to the management level receiving the data. Software engineers
love detail; project managers want only a summary and list of problems;
directors want details of the schedule and cost; VPs want to know when it
will be completed and the board wants to see pretty pictures that will look
good in the annual report.

Hello all

Following on from Steve's comments about presentation to the board...

I know this is probably an impossible dream...but...

Isn't it strange that whereas an Architect is expected to present his/her
building designs
to the client be they blueprints, models, or interactive computer-based
walkthroughs of
the building before it has been built, a Business or Systems Analyst or
Software Architect
would get fired if s/he presented a UML model to the board no matter how
high level !

Best Regards.
