Yep. AFAIK there is not, and has never been, any way to find out what sort of application is on the other end of an ALSA client name and number, other than by exploiting some understanding of the client name itself. I've just discovered that with ALSA 1.0.11rcX, it now also seems to be impossible even to find out whether an ALSA client is hardware or software. That's a problem.
