[I am only sort-of back -- will catch up properly in a day or so, but this came in while I was staring balefully at the inbox]

That was never terribly satisfactory, as it meant people tended to check out everything there instead of just the code tree. When making branches, we generally reckoned not to preserve all this stuff but branch only the vital (code) part, probably implicitly recognising that the original structure wasn't actually very good. Hence this discrepancy. (There may be some branches in there that do actually duplicate the whole of trunk/, but most just copy trunk/rosegarden.) I had a short discussion with Michael a while back about whether to fix the structure of trunk (i.e. your proposal no. 1) and we decided at the time not to press on with it because (1) it would force everyone with a working copy to "svn switch" if they want it to continue working and (2) it would take some thought about where to move the non-code bits (i.e. everything other than trunk/rosegarden that is beneath trunk/) to. Neither reason is very strong, but since we saw no very immediate reason other than tidiness to make the change either, we let it drop. If the current situation does actually break things for you, though, then perhaps we should fix it.
