Subject: [S-Scale Modeling] Recommending a survey

Hi,
I believe I've been on this list if not from the start, to almost from the
start.
I would like to ask all of you S scale modelers on this list the following
questions.

(1) Do you actually have a layout, or do you just model in S scale?

Right now I started on a new layout and it's only in the early stages. But
I did have an operating previously. Bill you know this in my case.

(2) If you do run your scale models on a layout, [yours or anybody's] are
they exactly prototypically made to scale with all the detail, including
underbodies?

Generally true except for the compromises in standards such as wheel width
and flange sizes and compromises for operations. The truss rods do not
really reach the end sills because of required truck swing, brakes do not
really work, and truss rods are not threaded onto turnbuckles. I do have a
caboose that includes the sink, bunks, etc. I do have cars that include all
the brake rigging including the retainer valve and piping, but not everyone
does.

I'm also fussier with the narrow gauge rolling stock than the standard
gauge, probably since my main interest is in narrow gauge. The standard
gauge is just supporting cast, and really an interchange. However, this
time the standard gauge will not be just scenery.

(3) Do you attempt to run scale models as true to scale as best you can?

In general, yes at this time.

(4) Are there models on your layout that are true to scale, but not
finished. Like the underbodies are not completely finished, and so on?

Yes. But lately, I have been fussier, so most of them date from earlier
times. It may be partially since I have

(5) Do you have any un-scale models running on your layout?

I have some things adapted from other scales, but they have been modified
enough that they are reasonable from at least a freelance point of view.

(6) Are you serious when you say that a SHS or AM model is off from the
prototype 1/10 of a foot, or that the slope is off a fraction, or that the
markings are wrong, or it has the wrong headlights for the model SHS-AM and
others are re-creating?

If I am critical, I'm serious, but I accept compromises and "close enough".

(7) Are you having fun?

Yes. But I find that I have the most fun after I run something I've built
even if it isn't perfect. A less perfect model I've built is generally more
satisfying to me than a more perfect model that I've just bought. But I
appreciate good models.
