Ed & List,

I used the 3/4" birch plywood to make my modules 17 years ago. It has NOT
warped at all! The "shop grade" birch plywood is bought by the skid load by
cabinet making shops. Most shops also have programmable panel saws that you
can stack up to 10 sheets and cut them all at the same time. The boards will
be PERFECT in width. In about 10 minutes a panel saw can make a sheet into a
LOT of 3" & 4" wide benchwork lumber from 1 sheet of plywood, and without
any effort or saw dust on your part. The birch plywood is also available in
4 x 10 and 5 x 8 sheets. I know someone who bought his benchwork lumber as
cut plywood from a cabinet shop. When he figured out the cost of materials
and time involved, it was still be better and cheaper then either buying the
pine or even the birch plywood and doing it himself. I plan on buying the
plywood cut if I ever build a real layout. Get a good chopsaw or better yet
a radial arm saw and you will be golden. I know all of the above because I
have been the purchasing agent for 2 cabinet shops as various times in my
career.

Another friend bought and used furring strips for a good amount of his
benchwork against my advice. I predict he will have trouble at some point in
the future with the wood warping.

What is allegedly the world's largest private home layout is about 1 hour
from me. Ken McCorry has a HUGE layout that has been in magazines. There is
NO pine in its entire construction. Most go to look at the trains. I have
spent a fair amount of time looking at the UNDERSIDE for the benchwork
ideas. The underside it a true wooden work of art. Instead of making 100
trips to Home Depot, Ken attacked the benchwork like a construction project.
He had the entire benchwork cut list made on the computer. He bought most of
the plywood at one time, saving money there, and kept cutting until he was
done! Does that answer your questions?

Thank You,
Bill Lane
