Gentlemen,

Just to add my two cents: The Southeastern Michigan S Gaugers new
display layout also has plywood construction. I personally ripped a
number of oak cabinet grade plywood panels to width (4") and then used
this as the lumber to construct the four modules that were on display
at the 2006 NASG Convention in Pontiac this summer. I constructed 12
of the 16 that comprise the layout. The reason the layout committee
chose this option over dimensional lumber is the dimensional stability
of plywood over regular lumber. I used a professional style table saw
using jigs and fixtures to insure that all major parts were exactly
the same. All joints were rabbited and dadoed and a premium wood glue
was used. These modules are (so far) holding up very well. When I
start on my new home layout, I will be using the same construction
techniques.

The modules were stained and finished in urethane by a club member
(Chuck Riker) and skirting will be held on using Velcro. So far, they
look quite nice. A couple of members (Terry Dwyer, Dale Baker and Tom
Hawley) have begun rudimentary scenery, pending more funding.

If we were to have used regular dimensional lumber, it would have cost
about the same, and from what I have seen in (what passes for) lumber
yards lately, I believe that it would have warped very quickly. We
store the modules in a trailer that is kept in an inside storage unit.

Photos available on request, and some are posted on the SMSG website.
