Jerry, I applaud your group for the wise construction techniques. Our
group built ours to similar standards, however yours truly in an effort
to save a few bucks (I have a layout and personal modules plus I like
brass models) went dumpster diving for some of my wood. The members
have teased me a bit but so far they have held up rather well. I
actually dismantled a homemade cabinet that was left in my studio and
the lumber turned out to be a very good grade of fir that is much
straighter and somewhat lighter than common pine. It now is part of a
six foot module in our groupings. I once got a shipping crate made from
lumber from '84 Lumber' a typical chain lumber yard, so I chose some
select pieces and built another 6 foot section. I often utilize sheets
of packing foam sheeting to use for scenery base, however I try and
cover the cheaper foam with the 'good' pink or blue stuff for the top
layer. We store our modules in garages which is not the best since
many times the moisture content is quite high, but I think we can
safely say that generally we can blame the Homesote for expansion
problems at the ends of the modules.
