The "back" side of the speaker must not be allowed access to open

I couldn't agree more, even a scratch built styrene box has made a big
difference in several installations I've seen at DPV. I recently set
up an Omnicon 2-10-0 with Tsunami large steam sound using a small
round PBL speaker that comes with an enclosure. I put it in the smoke
box, glued to the front of the weight. The sound is great and comes
from the business end of the locomotive, rather than the tender.

One caveat though, I prefer sound to be a bit more subtle, i.e. it
does not need to be so blasted loud you can't talk with each other in
the train room!! I've dialed my SHS 2-8-0 back to about 30% volume
and (IMHO) that sound level is great. The 2-10-0 is much the same.
I'm not sure the PBL speaker would work if someone wants locomotive
sound to be really loud...
