I don't suggest you jump right into the 21st century, but you might at least find the latter half of the 20th century satisfying to model. You could skip right over the Penn Central era and get into Conrail. Model railroading is doing fine as a hobby, but S is bound to die if it continues to be populated solely by people who use it as an escape from modern reality. Anyone who can say (as Mr AM once did, I think) that modern railroading is boring, is missing something in his little model RR soul.
