Ahhhhh.... sand tower memories... If I can digress with some
generally useless information: When we (RRM) began selling the OMI
two track sand towers we discovered that the foam inside the box was
so tight, it was pushing on fragile parts and causing them to break
in transit, creating the `kit'. We began doing "custom carving" of
the box's protective foam before shipment and presto-chango - the
kit issue went away.
Moral... When I met personally with Mr. Cho, Ajin's owner, in
Atlanta (1994?) to review the 2-6-6-6 pilot model, we spent about
1/3rd of our 7 hour session discussing how those locomotives would
be supported, wrapped, packed and boxed for shipment. Outcome... No
issues of damaged, broken, or scratched models. A lot of the
quality associated with builders is directly related to how much
effort the importer expends working with them proactively to resolve
issues. I suppose that is true for any supplier/ customer
relationship.
