"S"ay John.....It is a well known fact that if you ask ten S scale
guys for an opinion, you will receive twelve different answers. That
is because two of them will change their minds before you even get to
the last one.
I love brass that runs well. I am not fond of bad brass, but most of
us just convert bad brass to good brass. The only difference is that
some models convert easily and others are real sonuva guns to convert.
It is like model vs. modeler with the brass of daze gone bye (pre-
1990 or so). Warped zamac gearboxes, busted U-joints, a trail of
detail parts along the track due to bad solder joints, cheap HO
motors, out of gauge wheels, trucks screwed onto the tender while the
paint was still wet and stuck permanently and could not swivel, axles
falling out of journal boxes, wrong coupler height, wrong label on
the box (thus wrong model in my hands, not what was ordered), gears
that would unmesh themselves, etc., etc......the list goes on.
Real S men tackle such challenges with gusto! It is sort of like
seeing who can do the most pushups when you are in the Army. Gotta
work hard, but the ego boost is tremendous. The old phrase "my engine
runs better than your engine" was invented just for us S guys. Just
in case Jim K's temperature starts going up, the problems above were
all with regard to "OLD" brass. New brass is much better.
But, y'know, in spite of all the problems, those importers -- all of
them -- did their best to make things right for the customer. And as
far as I know, they succeeded once the initial shock wore off. Great
bunch of guys those importers. Using our money to build models that
don't work and then getting them repaired after the complaints roll
in and then asking for advance deposits on the next project. Where
else can you get serviced like that? And we just lapped it up! At
least we got our models and didn't lose money.
Not so sure about the working speeder project though. That one has
me worried. Any new news on Mr. Briggs?
Having fun. Don't get me wound up. I might fly off the track.
Cheers...Ed L.
