Having just switched to S, I have to agree with John here. When I
first started researching what was available in S and being a "scale
modeler" in N, I *knew* I didn't want anything to do with
"toy/hi-rail/American Flyer" trains.

Eventually Google led me to SHS' and AM's web site. I almost (I
believe I actually did at first) closed the web browser because I
thought they only made "American Flyer" items. They promote that
compatibility so intensely. It was only because I was determined and
kept digging that I realized that it is a marketing issue, and that
they do provide for the scale modeler. But, it was indeed confusing at first.

When I first started thinking about switching to S, one of the first
things I needed to research for myself was, "Is S just a toy-train
scale?". It was thanks to the local Houston S Gaugers group and their
modular layout in the malls and shows that I realized that there was
a "scale" version of S available. But my previous bias was to think
of S as a toy-train scale.

Seeing what can be done in S through web sites such as Bill Lane's
(to name just one of many great examples) made it clear to me that S
does have true-to-scale equipment.

Obviously, now I *know* S is a wonderful scale. I love the fact that
I can take a small ruler with me and look at each of those 1/64-inch
tickmarks and realize that they are 1 scale inches. Life is so much
easier in S! :-)

Just some thoughts from a newbie's perspective...
     Peter.
