Okay fellas,

Here's the next can 'o worms I'm going to open: minimum radius.  My
layout space is 10' wide and I'd like to get as much "straight run" in
that width as possible.  I plan to use easements on my curves.  The
late John Armstrong mentioned that a 27" radius curve with easements
could have better performance than a 30" radius curve without
easements.  I've read the NMRA RP-11 on curvature, but I don't think
the RP accounts for the effect of easements (they mention them, but
don't say if the RP is for an "eased" curve).  Anyhow, I'd rather draw
from your personal experiences.

I'll be operating SW-1s, 70-tonners, and SW-9s as my primary power
(all 45' or less), but would like to have the ability to run the
occasional Geep (~56').  The longest locomotive that might populate my
roster will be an SD-28 (~61'), but I may well be into a larger space
before that unit ever graces my rails.  Freight cars will be 55' or
less (mostly 40' and 50') and I've got the CAD drawings for a
laser-cut 60' Jim Crow combine (made one in HO, just gotta scale it
up) that'll be used as a caboose.  

I've been working on plans using 30" as a minimum for the mainline and
27.5" for sidings and spurs.  I'm trying to go larger (32"-34") for
the sake of appearances, but dropping an inch or two would really help
with getting things to fit.  What would you consider to be the
practical minimum for my situation?
