Ah, yes! Good old Miller tie strip. More than a decade ago I picked some up at the Ann Arbor model railroad show. It sat around the house for a few years until I came across some Code 125 rail--or was that Code 126? Anyway, I put it on the layout. Later from a good modeling friend, I purchased additional Miller tie strip and in response to an ad offering some Code 125 rail purchased that, too. I like the stuff and wish--knowing full well that Code 125 is very heavy rail in S scale--that I had some turnouts in the same code. In fact, one individual mentioned that he had some, but I have never heard back from him. I understand that it would allow me to operate the Flyonel Mike ugly flanges and all. I still lust after that Mike and wish it were available in S scale. Tom

I did a layout with 100 in Miller, starting in the mid-70s and tearing out due to a move in 1996; and the rail-insertion was tight enough as it was; the tight gauge would be half the difference between the base width of Code 125 and of Code 100. Later editions of the tie strip had wood grain molded into it. You could run AF wheels on Miller with 125 rail, not through switches, of course, the molded spike heads were low enough to clear it. They had to be big to have enough plastic mass to do the job. I got to see Bob Miller's place a couple times in the mid-1960s, and even today it is an awesome memory. I took the code 100 rail from a piece of Atlas HO snap-track and slid them into the strip and the gauge came out almost right, but just a little on the tight side. That, and the fact that the "spikes" are GODZILLA sized are the only real problems I could find with it... oh, and the lack of detail on the ties. The perfect spacing and arrangement of the ties could be an issue for some, but that can be overcome by using the strip primarily on well-maintained mainlines. Now, I have a question... would such a product do well today? If someone were to offer tie strip today... a tie strip that is far superior to the Miller strip, would there be a market for it?
