Take my word for it, breaking microslide cover slips will not work. They tend
to break in long sharp pieces. I know - I worked with them for over 35 years.
Perhaps you could come up with an old blender and mince pieces of clear broken
plastic. That would be a lot better on the fingers. You really don't want to
risk having very small "sharp micro knives" getting into your fingers. That is
a real pain - pun intended. Also, when you break them, you will find that you
have little control as to where they land. Very bad on pet and human paws!
