I rather concluded Friday was not the day I should have chosen for a drop-in,
as although I spent nearly $500 on some cars and structure kits (and could have
doubled that easily, especially with some of the specials Southwind was
offering), and I did meet a few familiar names from the list early before the
excursion left, it was apparent that the excursion WAS the principal activity
for the convention that day, at least during the day. I was not prepared to
take off three or four days to spend in Duluth, yet since I live about four
hours drive away, it did seem to make sense to try to see what an S scale
convention looked like. Had I but known, perhaps I could have tried to squeeze
the daytrip in on Saturday.
It does seem to me that the S scale convention is organized a bit differently
from other train events I've tried, with most activities (clinics, etc.) in the
evening, by which time I needed to have left if I'd just come for the day. I
am not complaining, just acknowledging that what worked for everyone who was
used to spending the entire block of time was unfamiliar to more casual
interests.
