I never knew John Bortz personally but did converse with him over the phone to
order a few decals from his inventory. He and several others have been an
inspiration to me to get into S scale rather than O scale: the late Jim Konas,
whom I did know. I visited with him at his home many times, and we discussed
his two favorite subjects, S-scale modeling and the Chicago Great Western;
Wally Collins and Frank Titman, neither of whom I knew personally, but their
efforts with the Herald and their modeling provided further inspiration. I
regret Jim's passing and the retirement of the others from modeling. They were
all a far remove from the contemporary
computer-addicted-texting-video-game-generation.
