My most interesting "Bortz Story" pertains to my first visit to see his layout.
Never having been there before, I had no idea what to expect. He says "let's
go see the layout" and walks into the kitchen. I thought that was rather odd,
but followed anyway. Then he whips the small rug off the floor and stashes it
in a corner. Then he points to the trap door in the floor. He lifts up the
trap door, climbs down a ladder (hope I remembered that correctly -- no stairs)
and says "C'mon down." So down I went into some dark unknown hole beneath the
kitchen. When the lights came on, we were standing in the middle of a huge S
scale layout crawling with large scratchbuilt steam locos, working drawbridge,
huge yard, etc. Quite a thrill for a youngish sprout just getting started in S
scale. Have never forgotten that visit. Great fun with a wonderful man. Ed L.
