A few years ago I had an instance in the past along the same lines mentined
by Charles, to wit:

A good model railroad friend was looking to increase size of his modeling
medium. (He was in HO at the time.) Bear in mind my friend is definitely a
"shake-the-box/RTR" kind of guy. (He simply doesn't have the dexterity to
do much more than that.) The scenery he has created on past layouts was
simplistic, but he was happy with it. When active, his real interest in
model railroading is operation. In fact, he used to make weekend trips (he
lives about 4.5 hrs from me) a couple/three times a year to operate with me
on my tri-level HO layout.

Anyway, he SERIOUSLY looked at S scale. Two things kept him from taking the
plunge:

1. The lack of a comprehensive prefab track system.

2. The lack of variety in "shake-the-box/RTR" equipment.

He decided to go with 3-rail in the "hi-rail" approach on account of the
"plop n' play" nature of it, and spent a ton of money therein.

Though he is envious of the size and quality of my S scale stuff, he is
convinced he made the right choice.

Oh well... one that "got away".

FWIW: His investigations into S scale piqued my interest in the scale... and
the rest is history! So, I guess S scale gained at least ONE more proponant
from his explorations?

Good points, Ed!

We talk about converting people from HO, but we don't have a DCC-friendly
track system comparable to Atlas HO, which is bound to be a big stumbling
block for those wanting to move up to S.
