Maybe what I am really wondering is if it might make sense for someone to
actually manufacture the perfect turnout and charge an extra $10 or $15 for
that perfection.

Hi Ed, I was just going by what I've seen, that most S scalers build their
own switches or use BK kits which are basically the same thing? Buying
shinoharas and reworking them also requires about the same skills as
handlaying. Compared to the hundreds of things we build to complete a layout a
switch is a pretty simple project.
I'm sure Atlas has already looked at the reasons for and against making S
track and apparently they have not found it compelling from a profit
perspective yet? I tend to think Atlas has a better handle on the track market
than we do so it's hard to fault them?
If newbies just need some help getting started the BK kits or the fast track
products are a good way to get the confidence to move forward. Thinking about
the difficulties is a lot harder than actually building a switch, in reality
there's only a few ways to put it together and a few bucks of wasted rail and
spikes will find all the possible pitfalls. My only lasting painfull memories
of the learning process are when I drove a spike into the end of my thumb and
when a dropped a pin vice with a tiny drill bit that stuck into the top of my
bare foot, the rest was pretty fun. I actually just got some PC ties and code
55 rail to lay some tiny TT scale track and switches so that should tell the
doubters that it's not too hard?......dave
