While batteries are important, the other factor to consider is the effeciency
of motors. Modern motors with exceedingly strong magnets need less "juice" to
rotate or can run longer without totally discharging the battery. As the motor
magnets get stronger, the feasibility of all this becomes more and more
mainstream. Gone are the days of cleaning the track. Will anyone miss that?

Two years ago, in Anaheim, CA, the NMRA national convention had a display of a
new system with three sensors mounted on the ceiling over a train layout. The
loco had some sort of transmitter/receiver and the three sensors could
triangulate the loco's exact location within an inch or so. So the Dispatcher
knew exactly where the train was at all times. Except, perhaps, when one track
crossed over another. Whoa....what fun...!!

You bet'cha...!!

Nope. I am stuck in the DCC world for the seeable future. But my grandkids
are ready....
