Battery power?  Been there and done that in 1/2" scale.

Works very well if you just intend to power the locomotives.  You want sound 
and lights, you will need to "carry" lots of batteries to supply the necessary 
amperage to run everything for a reasonable amount of time in one charging 
session.  Battery technology has a long way to go before we will see batteries 
small enough that are reasonably affordable for this to work in S scale.  

For the folks that want all the bells and whistles (and lights), this one of 
the two main advantages of DCC - you have a consistant source of power through 
the tracks to run everything.

For the string guys who want the fixins, I guess you could run an extension 
cord along the string.  :-)  Not sure what the key wind up guys have to do . .
