StringBob,

I used the bride as an example of things like extreme contrast--not too
many engineers where white!

Anyway you have to be careful so the 'white spike' doesn't go off the
scale, but you want to push it as far as possible. What you can do in
this situation other than fill lighting of some kind would be to make up
two versions of the image--a normal one and one with more shadow detail
showing. At his point you can use photoshop to combine the two into a
HDR (high dynamic range) image. I often don't like the result--seems to
look a little fake. A second way in to cut out the bride and move her
on top of the second version of the engine. That takes some hand work,
but is probably the best of done properly--work on the image pixel by
pixel--I often enlarge the image to 200-400% to work on. A third way to
make it happen is to purchase a set of filters/actions under the name of
PhotoKit. I bought mine several years ago for about $100. It's
designed to act like working in the darkroom of years ago--the same mind
set. In that set is something called Contrast Mask #1 #2 #3--your
choice. It does wonders by subduing the highlites and bringing out the
shadows. A contrast mask was a very tedious darkroom procedure that
involved sandwiching a out of focus black/white positive with the
original color or black/white image. It was used only for very
difficult projects because it was a lot of trial and error involved.
With the digital version you can see the results in a few seconds!
