So Michael, what was the steam loco kit that you bought? I built a SSL&S
Pacific kit back then but could never get it to run smoothly enough. I sold
all of the other SSL&S kits I had acquired and bought brass steam, which I
Mononized with SSL&S parts. Fiddling with mechanisms is not my thing. I would
rather spend my time on the layout, and I don’t think I’m alone.

Didn't work that way for me. I am a steam only, scale only guy that came to S
before there was an SHS 2-8-0 or AM Pacific. I saw the 3/16 Scale Railroading
magazine, and when I learned there was one steam locomotive kit available, I
decided I would give S a try. When I saw that the standard wheel was RP-25,
much closer to P64 than P87, I plunged in. Never even gave hi-rail a thought.

Not disagreeing, just my anecdotal information.
