Pieter, What I was trying to relate was the smallish numbers really
needed once the 'usual engines' have been made. I don't know how
popular Fn3 is but it's obviously not big when it comes to that scale
and the size of this engine. Bear in mind this engine was about 5 ft
long without tender, so one could only imagine what radii it needed.
This engine was a DRG&W 4-10-2 or similar (don't have the photos handy
right now). When I photographed the engine first, several had been sold
as this purchaser was the 'starter money' for the project.
I don't know how many Challengers, Big Boys or Ac's Jess Bennett built
but I image a few dozen total. I think many steam engines wouldn't get
numbers beyond 8 if offered. I would love to have a Milwaukee 2-6-2
Prairie and I could probably find 3 other guys who wanted one, but in
today's world a builder would be charging $3-5000 for one. So I realize
it'll never happen unless I scratch build one. I had a custom made
Southern MS-4 built from many SSL&S parts. I paid somewhat over $300
for it--the guy quit making them. One could rightly assume he didn't
make any money building them. So if he would have charged +- $1500 at
that time, he might be making them today if he could have raised prices
as necessary. Unfortunately none of this stuff fits my budget right now.
