No one has mentioned the problem of mixed gearing for Locos. Santa Fe had FTs 
and F7s (and others) with some units for freight use and other for passenger 
use. I would suspect that would be a limitation as well as the "start up" 
differences between ALCO and EDM. Perhaps that was why they had different 
colour 
schemes. There were a lot of us Irish on the Rail Roads and they would have had 
to have some way of telling freight from passenger locos!   :-)

I do it all the time, though the AM models are remotored.   However, that was 
done for smoothness and not speed change.

It was not uncommon on the Western Maryland to see a F7 A unit with an Alco RS3 
and a Geep or FA/FB together.
