No one has mentioned the problem of mixed gearing for Locos. Santa Fe had FTs and F7s (and others) with some units for freight use and other for passenger use. I would suspect that would be a limitation as well as the "start up" differences between ALCO and EDM. Perhaps that was why they had different colour schemes. There were a lot of us Irish on the Rail Roads and they would have had to have some way of telling freight from passenger locos! :-)
