Guys: Good points all. although Carstens already has a couple of good books to get you started...Model Railroad Structures From A to Z by Wayne and Mary Cay Wesolowski, and a new one that I'm currently half way through reading....Scratchbuilding for Model Railroaders by Bob Walker. I love reading about scratchbuilding and sometimes when I'm not reading about it, I'll actually pick up a tool and do something.
There are no mysteries surrounding scratchbuilt structures...just start simple...a little 4-walled structure using commercially available components, and go from there. Most of the structures on my layout will be scratchbuilt if and when I'm done. Of course I'm modelling a rural area where buildings were usually of more modest design. This afternoon while the snow is flying, I've been building a foamcoremock up of the Lake Erie and Northern station at Port Dover...a modern looking building with a lot of walls and nooks and crannies. I'll make my mistakes on that while I figure our the right construction strategies for the proper model. Maybe videos on building a simple structure or at least a good how to do it book? It would be nice if people could learn that's it's not that hard to build something once the process is understood and that they are missing out on a lot of satisfaction of modeling by not digging in. ....dave [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
