Many thanks for the details of replacement fans.   I might wait a bit
to see what I want to do with the fans and the speaker.  I've yet to
pluck up courage to take the shell off and try turning the speaker
over to see if I prefer the result.  It was a bit of a hassle to get
the bits and all the wire in without fouling the trucks and drive
shafts and I might not be so lucky next time. :-)   I suspect that my
next job might best be to fit a plug and socket between shell and
chassis to make fitting easier.

My next main job is to convert the trucks/wheels for UK S Scale
standards so that I can run the loco on my existing track and what I
might do is build new trucks so that the loco can have its trucks
changed to suit either US S scale or UK S scale.

I would also check the speaker on the second unit - maybe swap
speakers with the good unit and see if the fault follows the speakers.
