I've been watching the interactions on the traction group, somewhat on this 
same topic....
Guys, they actively coordinate purchases of short-run items with the 
manufacturers.
You vote with you order or commitment to buy, as you declare it to whoever 
moderates that particular conversation.....
Coordinated "group buys" are 'de-rigeur' over there. And they're not talking 80 
units, but 20!
I should think this much larger, more vocal group could more easily overcome 
any tenancy for collective or individual hand-wringing to the benefit of all.
What say, let's try it?
I'm too new to the hobby to know who to contact, but a nice 50's-60's or 
transition car, perhaps a D&RGW or SP chemical tanker or hopper....or even a 
caboose to launch my S Scale odyssey......
