Yeah, I mentioned his thread in my last post, but never got to it.

There is no reason for Jim King o go back to flat kits, as he has the skill and 
equipment to do the great kits he does produce. If we don't support those 
efforts, I don;t see a reason to think that saving a few dollars on an older 
style kit will matter.

OTOH, many more of us without the advantages of being a professional probably 
could learn in a short time to make acceptable castings from our scratch build 
models. If we do encounter a period of slow product from the regular 
manufacturers, some of that slack could be made up if people who can and do 
scratch build began to exchange sets of castings. I doubt we would want to go 
full "kit" with detailed instructions, supplied components from other 
manufacturers, etc. I for one would be willing to assemble a car from simple 
sets of major castings, supplying my own brake gear and grab irons. Maybe the 
builders could trade castings rather than selling for cash.

Also worth noting that many HO resin kits are still done flat.
