In many cases guardrails are necessary.   A guardrail will pull a wheel and 
axle into the groove and prevent the opposite wheel from getting hit and 
derailed while traversing a turnout.  Also guardrails help to re-rail a 
wheelset if it is off the track.

I use hi-rail and scale wheelsets and having guardrails with just the right 
spacing and in just the right places makes this possible.
