A guiding role :>) assuming the frogs and guard rails are built correctly.
While prototype cars don't often run against the flanges we still need them
on models because as Bill recently said weight and gravity don't scale. Our
model trucks are also not as flexible as prototype trucks so there are times
when the wheel treads are not solidly planted on the rails so the flanges are
the safety net keeping the cars off the ground. John's code 88 wheels with
moderate sized flanges give a lot more room for error than P64 flanges while
looking a lot better than wider wheels. Anyone who thinks flanges are not
necessary should take a lathe and remove the flanges from a few cars and see
how they run. They might get lucky and stay on the rails but more likely
they'll find a way to get over the non existing flanges...Rgds Dv Brnm
