I've heard this stuff before from my grandfather... and I understand it and the truth of it. However, the simple fact that none of us have ever heard a train go by WITHOUT hearing the flange of the wheel scraping against the rails is proof that if the flanges were not there, the train would derail. IN A PERFECT WORLD where all track and wheel set was precision engineered to ever possibly perfection (perfectly level, perfectly gauges, etc.), it might be possible to run a train without flanges...
... but lets see someone try to prove it. Better put a BUCYRUS on alert.
