My current layout uses fluorescent tubes following the shape of the layout
in an essentially continuous fashion. I use 5000K, 92CRI lamps and one of
these years I'll finally get the lighting valance installed. My old layout
started with incandescent bulbs, but I switched 50% of them to compact
fluorescents back when they were $20 a bulb to cut down on the heat load.
Again I followed the outline of the layout behind a valance. I did some
testing and came to the conclusion that what looked best to me required a
lamp spacing of not more than the vertical distance from the layout to the
lamp. In that case with the layout 42" and about an 8' ceiling, I used a
nominal 4' between the lamps. Which required a lot of lamps. Of course I
have a lot of fixtures now. It's a little hard to simulate that giant light
bulb in the sky.
I also installed some blue incandescent light bulbs in case I want to have
night operations on my current layout but they're spaced fairly far apart.

As far as the lighting is concerned, on a tall layout, you're pretty
much stuck with fluorescent tubes or some kind of multi lamp string
affair. I often times have trouble keeping the fixture out of the
photos and they have a tendency to cause lens flair. If you do the
mathematical/physics thing of distance (fixture to layout), intensity
and light spread, they quickly end up fighting each other. Since my
layout was built somewhat for photo purposes, I have 10' ceilings in
much of the room, so I'm about 6' from the ceilings and I wish it were
more sometimes!
