Hi John --
Yes, I helped a fellow build a layout rigidly suspended from the ceiling of his
garage (it had a very high ceiling). The table had a cut out in the middle
for people to walk to the cars, and the table was over the cars by about 6
inches (VERY weird to drive under). Overall size was about 8 by 15 feet, as I
recall. We used steel angle stock purchased at the local home improvement
store for the suspension members, and the table was made of plywood stringers
and 1/4” sheet at the surface. Not light, but two of us could support it
while it was being hung, and I could walk on in while laying track. The angle
stock bracing worked OK, but I did manage to cut my head on it once, making a
nice red mess of things. I would recommend checking the structure of your
garage BEFORE hanging anything of considerable weight. At least in the west
where snow is unlikely, the garage roof is only meant to hold itself up and
maybe some rainwater, not 500 pounds of model railroad. If anyone wishes a
photo, I can send it out. Just email me off list...
Have fun!

Has anyone ever suspended a layout from the ceiling. Then there are no legs in
the way or stooping.
I sort of recall hearing of a narrow gauge layout in a California garage which
was pulled up so the car could be parked..
