Right you are that John is a pioneer!   If you look closely at the 
famous 1869 photo of the completion of the transcontinental railroad  
(not 'intercontinental' as recently mentioned by a very smart man), John 
is the gent hanging off the front of the Jupiter holding the bottle... 
probably scotch.
