Ahh, I have a model RR from 1967 when the picture section/theme was all AF.
A first and last time AF or S has been mentioned in that magazine I bet. I think PBL is selling some of their boxcars weathered and/or uniquely lettered. Heck this trend started way back in the Athearn blue box days. As Roy Inman has mentioned, people who hold the 'keys' to publicity avenues (displays or magazines) generally like to see some kind of returns. This is nothing new. remember when Gilbert sought money to pay for paint masks to the number of times you see the MacIntosh laptops in today's TV programs. Since RMC is now receiving monthly checks from our suppliers they are more likely to run S features. Model Railroader, by my quick head count has run at least 10 layouts in either the regular magazine or Great Model railroads since I've been working with them. I helped with six of those layouts--plus one additional in the wings. Michael's comment regarding "just plop and you'll have a feature" is pretty far off base. I just recently submitted a proposal for a super nice N scale layout that got rejected. The layout was built by a couple of MMR's and has super scenery, many modified RTR buildings besides a fair amount of scratch/kitbashed buildings. You have to submit what they need at the moment. You can be rejected because of your geographical location (too many Chicago layouts!, the area or RR modeled (too many Pennsy layouts), too many On30 layouts-- already 3 in stock! Submitting to any of the magazines is a little like any of the elimination programs on TV--excellent work, different work, exciting work will normally float to the top and be published. That being said, if American Models, SHS, River Raisin, DesPlains and Pine Canyon all ran full page ads in any of the magazines the balance that has been the norm would certainly be tilted in our direction. Many have mentioned that the magazines rarely give a product a bad review, especially if their ad is a few just pages away. Magazines make their money from ad revenue, so advertisers do have some sway when it comes to how the magazines treat editorial content.
