You said a mouthful there!  Never thought about it that way, but you're right - 
most similar car types do look the same today.

The only ones I find interesting are the intermodal cars... expecially the well 
cars... and the odd-shaped and multi-trucked, specialty flat cars as well.

If I were going to model today, my trains would be mostly intermodal cars and 
flat cars.  A "Razorback" as the Seaboard used to call them.

  This is after riding 207 non tourist railroads over the years. 
   The diesels only vary according to the paint scheme. 

  Riding in the cab all day in an oil fired Santa Fe 2-8-0,  In an EBT caboose, 
 In a C&O or a NYC loco cab.
