    There are small scenes that would look totally realistic with intermodal 
cars. I recall a small terminal in MRR magazine, might have been in Alabama, 
Mississippi, or Georgia... somewhere down south. It even used old locos like 
alcos or baldwins.Another scene could be a carfloat layout bringing intermodal 
cars to the city for trash disposal trains like they use on the New York and 
Atlantic. 
   The Reno branch of the WP had an autorack ramp , I think they said they used 
it to move rental cars around to spots where they were needed. Sparks had a 
fairly small intermodal ramp that could be modeled in S pretty well, just leave 
out the long mainline trains and concentrate on the local scene. I think there 
are ways to build a layout with any kind of S equipment if one takes the time 
to look around and see what the railroads did with the various kinds of 
equipment.For instance I've seen unit train style rotary dump gondolas lettered 
for Herzog and used to haul ties and other rail maintenance loads and 89 foot 
flatcars with cranes and other MW equipment on them doing track
