That's never gonna happen. Mention S and most folks will think of American
Flyer regardless, not C-D, Kinsman, SHS, AM or the like. It's the reality of
the situation.
Lionel's got a deep history, with or without American Flyer. It's there, it's
never going away and S will be tied to it for quite some time. Just like 2
rail O-Scalers cringe when being compared to Lionel, we will have to grin and
bear the American Flyer comparison.
Fleishmann and Marklin are still out there along with their loyal followers.
And if you look back at their stuff from the late 50's on up, they were
consistant with what was being offered by the likes of Athearn of the era.
Still, there's also the el-cheapo bottom of the line HO from Model Power that
won't seem to die, along with the somewhat better old Mantua branded stuff.
Look in the Walthers HO catalog, it's not 100% fine scale HO. There's a fair
amount of toylike HO listed within the covers.
And while MTH may offer HO and O train sets for M&M's and Christmas, plus the
occasional aquarium cars, they also make some pretty fine HO Bi-Polar's, Little
Joe's, Daylight's, F-units and big steam and diesels that are up there with the
best of HO.
Model railroading is all in how one interperts it. I've seen some 3-rail O
Gauge layouts that the LAST thing you notice is the third rail. These guys use
Kadee couplers and "fixed" pilots. No rocket-firing flat cars, no cows on
tracks, no out of scale accessories. Scale in every way except for deep
flanges and the third rail. Kinda the way Brooks Stover models in S (minus the
third rail, of course.)
