They make what the like,  want, and feel good about any subject that intrigues 
them.   Maybe they like to crank up the S Gaugers.  That seems to be half S 
anyway.  At least my 76 years in S seems to point that way.

  This, on the other hand, looks like one company trying to steal business

  Which also makes one wonder if enough modern/contemporary modellers can be 
  found to support either one's production. But MTH and Lionel are both 
  making and apparently selling such locos to the O gauge crowd. So we hope 
  they know what they're doing.
