For the non-sprung trucks used on the original PS cars, I have done likewise so

  If you are asking about the A M trucks on the smooth side car, not the photo 
John referenced, yes there was a very long truck mounted coupler shank - there 
was even a scale dummy coupler. I have always cut that box that holds the dummy 
coupler off of the truck bolster and body mounted the couplers.
