I've wondered how to modify the AM passenger car coupler situation. The dummy coupler on the long shank comes installed on the Budd and the Amtrak Superliner cars. In my experience the only way to couple the cars to each other and a Kadee is lift the end of the car and drop its coupler into the coupler of the adjacent car. Reverse to uncouple. A pain because you have to pay attention to re-railing the truck.
Because my track radii are tighter than typical scale layouts I've thought about modifying the shank by removing the coupler and mounting a modifed Kadee shank. At least I could couple the cars automatically. If my curves were broader I would think about body-mounting the Kadees.
