I agree with you there. Toy  trains came first. Hand made from wood and pulled 
by string(nothing to do with String Bob). Tin plate came around and then 
cast(plastic) to where we are now. and now how many scales do we have that 
cater to space available for a layout. Look at N guage and now Z guage. Z guage 
is made by Micro-trains( N). and that market (Z) is changing from mostly Steam 
to now offer diesel locos.

I disagree, all model railroading is descended from toy trains.  Over time, it 
has evolved into the various modeling scales.
