Not quite sure this sounds right. I do not know of a single manufacturer that 
decided to not make S scale products because AF existed.  Usually, it is 
because they put their toe in the water and didn't sell as much as they had 
hoped.  Then they pull their toe back out without jumping in.  

I remember quite a few conversations along the lines of: "In HO I sold 500 
without even advertising.  With S I have to pay for ads in four different 
magazines and wait for six months to sell 50."   Overland, Sunset, ALCO Models, 
etc. have all made similar comments.

Needless to say, I tell 'em that everything ever made in S sells out 
eventually.  Only a slight exageration there which I conveniently overlook.  
(Jim K can tell us if RRM's experience was like that.)  But that does not 
compete with the realization that in HO, the brass was frequently sold before 
the ship docked in California.  Not always true with S and, these days, not 
always true in HO either.

There always is the comparison to HO -- over and over again.  If HO 
disappeared, we'd be in much better shape.
