Well, a 2-56 would be pretty impractical in N...

The AM Snap-Loc uses a 2-56 and has a narrower draft gear, so it probably 
doesn't have anything to do with draft gear width.  

It takes a little work to mount an 802 on a pad designed for a Snap-Loc or #5, 
but it's not insurmountable.  I've gotten used to it.

The mounting pads AM supplies for things like the U25B's are drilled for the 
802.

I would still point to the 802's ancestor, the 803 as the reason why it is what 
it is.  A big old 2-56 screw head would probably been upsetting to the On3er's, 
whose ranks likely consist of 100% fine scale modelers.

Besides, I've found the surplus 802 screws I've collected come in handy for 
other projects.
