Group,
Thanks to all who replied to help me out with this. Since all five AM GP
locomotives showed the same symptoms (unsteady at low speed) I suspected they
all had the same problem. If I had paid more attention to the differences among
the units in the first place I wouldn't have made that mistake. With everything
disconnected it's obvious that the one group (two units) with U-joint drive
couplings should have their motors replaced, and the other group, the one with
the better motors, should have their pen spring drive couplings replaced. For
now I'm just going to mate the U-joint drives to the better motors to see what
happens.
It shouldn't be necessary to take the added step of installing the low speed
worm. I received a response from a list member who had found that the
combination of low speed worm and older worm gear did make a fair amount of
noise.
Based on the feedback I received about their advantages, if all goes well I'll
consider replacing the geared wheel sets with NWSL parts where possible (my
engines have two different axle bearing setups).
